On the Inside Looking Out is a National Scholastic Art and Writing Gold Medal Award Winning Photograph. It was taken in Scotland at the Clan MacDonald Fortress located on the Isle of Sky. The Fortress had burned down in the mid 1900's and therefore all that was left was ruins. Knowing this history, I decided to make the photo black and white to add drama and also to emphasize the different types of lights showing through the window frame, such as silhouette and rim lighting. I was interested in using the window and the overgrown plants to frame the landscape in which the ruins were surrounded by in order to show beauty within the rundown and abandoned fortress.
